Though South Africa and the United States are oceans apart, anti-miscegenation is present in both their societies. It is only with movies like Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, and One Potato, Two Potato, and the Civil Rights Movement during the same decade, that the US takes steps to change their racist and restrictive marriage laws. The film is about the marriage between a black man, Frank, and a white woman, Julie, in a time where anti-miscegenation laws and racial prejudice were painfully present. Julie is divorced and has a young girl named Ellen from her previous marriage. Frank lives with his parents on a farm outside of town, which may explain his quiet, almost shy demeanor. We learn from his father later in the movie that he grew up and went to school with white people, and so Frank feels more comfortable around them compared to other black people. It is through frequent interactions with white people that he meets Julie. They begin a simple friendship and start walking together home in public. One night they do this, and a policeman tells Julie to take her â€Å"customer† elsewhere, meaning that he thought there was no way a white woman would want to associate herself with a black man unless she was a prostitute. Afterward, Frank is furious because he knows the policeman would not have done that if he was white, but Julie laughs it off, focusing on how silly it was that a policeman would believe a soft-spoken person like herself would be a prostitute. Julie’s white privilege, in my opinion, shows in this scene, because, while Frank is rightfully angry and upset that the policeman blatantly diminished their relationship by calling it prostitution, Julie can and does ignore this, because being with Frank is the only reason why she was called a prostitute. Without a black man walking with her, there is no way the officer would have stopped to say what he did. Despite this incident, Frank and Julie fall in love and eventually get married. Frank father disapproves this relationship between his son and a white woman, for fear that it will make both of their lives difficult. He warns Frank that society is too interwoven with racial prejudice to accept a relationship between a white woman and a person of color. Frank is shaken by this and heeds his father’s advice by ignoring Julie altogether. Eventually, Julie wears him down by waiting in his car to confront him, and Frank tells her â€Å" It won’t work between them,† because there is too much history of anti-black sentiments and racism between them. He is black, and she is white and there is too much hate between them. But, just as she did after the police-prostitute incident, Julie ignores the future hardships they will both face and argues that because they love each other, they can overcome everything. This convinces and empowers Frank to go through with the wedding after all. During the ceremony, the camera moves past the happy couple and towards a white woman in the background. She looks disgusted by Frank and Julie, which exemplifies the taboo interracial marriage was seen as in the 60s and before. Even though Frank and Julie’s marriage was legal, society was not prepared for two people in love to be happy together if they were not of the same race. Frank, Julie, and Ellen move their new family to Frank’s family’s farm. Frank’s mother welcomes Julie with open arms, but it takes Frank and Julie’s new child for him to, finally, warm up to Julie. A happy, blended family. Unfortunately, the story does not end there. Julie’s ex-husband returns after abandoning Julie and Ellen after four years to get reacquainted and be in Ellen’s life. Now, understandably, Julie is appalled that Joe is back after all this time, and refuses to give Ellen to her father. Sadly, this is when Joe sees that Julie has married a black man, and lives with Frank’s parents. Joe is furious because he believes Ellen will be corrupted as a result of growing up in a black household, and files for sole custody of Ellen. Frank’s lawyer tells him that, even though Joe abandoned his family for four years, Joe has a good chance of winning. Frank’s father tells him to run away with Julie and their kids, because he does not want the new family to lose Ellen, but Frank refuses and says he wants to fight. Later. he goes to the movies alone, and while watching a film where the Native Americans fight the white people, he screams to the screen, â€Å"Kill ‘em! Kill the white bastards!†, a sentiment that shows how Frank has changed with his views of white people. Previously, Frank worked, watched movies, even attended wedding s with white people, but Joe’s actions have aggravated Frank, to the point where he is yelling at a movie screen and rooting for the Native Americans to kill the very group he himself is fighting against. Julie goes to Joe before the court hearing and pleads him to reconsider, which only infuriates him more, so much so, that he even forces himself onto her. After this encounter, they go to court, and Joe wins custody of Ellen. Joe goes to the farm to take Ellen away, and Ellen, believing that she will come back to the farm, is miserable and extremely upset when she discovers she will be living with her father full time. She hits her mother in rage; she does not want to leave her brother and new family, and the only happy, full home she’s known. The movie closes with Julie running after the taxi Ellen and Joe are in, and Ellen screaming, â€Å"Let me stay! I promise I’ll be good!† In comparison to the other movie of a similar topic, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, One Potato, Two Potato was much more difficult to research about. While Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner has big Hollywood actors like Sidney Porter and Katherine Hepburn, One Potato, Two Potato actors were not known in the movie industry, and â€Å" director Larry Peerce could not even get a major US film distributor for the movie†¦Ã¢â‚¬  un til he got on a late night talk show and showed a clip of the movie (Turner Classic Movies, Film Articles). Now, both movies touched on topics that were shocking and never before seen in films, but One Potato, Two Potato was arguably the more realistic. Showing hardships like losing a custody hearing and ending the movie with a little girl screaming about not wanting to leave her mother, it stunned the viewers during the time in which it was shown. Black men struggle with this notion that they are all dangerous, violent, and inhuman, and the way Frank is discussed and treated by some of the white people in the movie displays the anti-black, specifically anti-black men sentiments society still expresses to this day, arguably to a less extent. History has a big impact on the creation and topic of this movie. During the production of the film, many laws and court cases were changing the way people, specifically people of color could live their lives. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is an important piece of legislation because it prevented people of color to be denied places in public spaces, stopped the discrimination in the workplace, regardless of color, race, religion, sex, or nation origin. Frank and Julie met through their job, and so the ability for Frank to even work alongside white people is through the Civil Rights Act of ‘64. Another historical legal action that is significant to the story would be the Loving v. Virginia case in 1967. In this court case, the Lovings, a Virginian interracial couple consisting of a woman of color named Mildred and a white man named Richard broke the law by being married in a state that considered it illegal. They had to travel to Washington, D.C. to get married, getting around Vi rginia’s Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which made it illegal for white people and people of color to get married. They were convicted for breaking the law and forced to leave their home for no less than 25 years and move to the US capital. Rightfully so, the Lovings were frustrated, so they wrote to the then-Attorney General, Robert F. Kennedy, and the American Civil Liberty Union (ACLU), pleading them to help them sue Virginia. The ACLU helped the Lovings get their case in court, and the argument for the Lovings was that Virginia’s anti-miscegenation law violated their â€Å"the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment† (Oyez.org). The Supreme Court sided with the Lovings, and that the decision to marry someone should be made by the individual, not the state they reside in. Although Perez v. Sharp, a similar court case resulting in anti-miscegenation laws violating the 14th Amendment, preceded Loving v. Virginia, Loving v. Virginia, resulted in the United States abolishing anti-miscegenation laws in every state. One Potato, Two Potato and the Loving v. Virginia happened within 3 years of each other, and are direct results of the Equal Rights Movement occurring at the same time. With each law and legislation, people of color, especially black people, were becoming more equal, whether it was marrying, working with, or even using the same facilities as white people. Though it was legal, Frank and Julie’s marriage received criticism from outsiders, whether it was from Frank’s parents, Frank and Julie’s friends, or even random onlookers. It is only with adequate legislation and the acceptance of society that something as â€Å"revolutionary† as interracial marriage can be seen as â€Å"normal†. The first peered reviewed article accessed from the Athletic Training Education Journal titled â€Å"Redefining Professional Knowledge in Athletic Training: Whose Knowledge Is It Anyway?† examines the way that Athletic Training has defined it body of knowledge and how to secure that body of knowledge in the Athletic Training discourse community. The second peered reviewed article titled â€Å"Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning† not only discusses reading and writing at a college level, however also discusses the role of rhetorical reading while writing and reading. The first difference that was apparent was the formatting of the two articles. The first article by McKeon et al. appears to use an APA format for their article. APA format typically includes an abstract as well as a reference page that list the sources that were utilized throughout the paper, this paper included both. The APA citations are also different than the MLA citations. The Haas and Flower article is done in an MLA format, it does not include an abstract, title page and the source page is referenced as a â€Å"work cited† page which is typical of MLA formatting. The citations in MLA formatting are presented differently on the â€Å"works cited† page than a reference page of the APA format. What was observed in both articles that was similar, although using the different formats, was that both articles were 1-inch margins and 12-point font which is adhering to both the MLA and APA formats. To attract a reader typically organization of an article is important. These two articles differed in how they were organized, for instance the article â€Å"Redefining Professional Knowledge in Athletic Training: Whose Knowledge Is It Anyway?† is organized by headings that clearly represent the facet of the information that is to follow the heading. Haas and Flowers article â€Å"Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning† does not include headings to present information, the information is sporadically placed within the article, including data represented by the study itself. A prominent similarity between the two articles was that they were both evidence-based articles. The article â€Å"Redefining Professional Knowledge in Athletic Training: Whose Knowledge Is It Anyway?† the study shows that by clearly relating the Professional body of knowledge and the evidence that is utilized in the evidence-based practice helps to secure that there is, in fact, authority and legitimacy to the Athletic Training Profession body of Knowledge. These studies represented primarily the different ways that college students read and write. These studies were performed in hopes that undeniable proof would indeed help to strengthen the abilities of college students in the aspects of reading and writing. There were similarities to the stylistic form of writing of both the articles. The Haas and Flower article was more of an active voice rather that a passive voice. This was noted mainly because of wording and sentence structure. An active voice basically describes what the subject is doing or going to do, which in this article could be clearly defined throughout. The article by McKeon el. at. also used an active voice throughout the article. Suggesting what could be done as well as what is being done to secure their Professional Body of Knowledge in the Athletic Training field. Using an active voice in both articles helped to validate the strength of the articles which is important to the reader. Regarding the convention of the two articles they differed in how information was conveyed through visual illustration. It was clear that the authors Haas and Flower utilized multiple illustrations to identify the results and convey important information a manner that was visually understood. This allowed for information to be conveyed faster and accurately with different visuals, i.e. graphs, figures. In the article â€Å"Redefining Professional Knowledge in Athletic Training: Whose Knowledge Is It Anyway?† the authors chose to not utilize many visuals, instead they utilized the grammar convention, which made deciphering the article slightly more time consuming that when visuals are incorporated. In short, the common goal of both articles was to communicate information to help advance their specific discourse community. In the Writing Studies community the information relayed, no matter how, was to improve the reading and writing skills of college students. The common goal simply stated was to advance each discourse community with the studies that were performed. Analysis Reading both articles, it was clear the active voice was representative of both the Writing Studies and Athletic Training discourse communities. Using the active voice defines a characteristic of both communities and the way they communicate, making sure that information is conveyed, clearly, concisely and straight to the point. This is an important attribute to these discourse communities simply because to advance it is important to understand and communicating efficiently is important. Utilizing the active voice also relays the strength and validation to the article which is important to the reader also. These two articles are clearly written as evidence-based articles, this is another important characteristic of the discourse communities of which the authors belong. It shows that both discourse communities rely on data that has scientifically evident and data that proves the facts. This information is made available in both articles through concise experiments that resulted in a conclusion that was beneficial to both discourse communities. This is an important attribute in the discourse communities because the reputable proof that is determined through these experiments reflects that the discourse communities require information that is only factual and based by scientific evidence. Organizational manner of both articles as stated was different. The article by McKeon, el. at. chose to structure the paper with an introduction, method, result, analysis and discussion format. This type of structure can be a representative characteristic of the discourse community Athletic Training by suggesting the discourse community relies mainly on scientific evidence and factual data. Utilizing headings helps the reader follow and have a clearer understanding of the material that is being discussed. The article by Haas and Flower chose to take a more laxed approach to the structure of their article. The authors used very little headings and left the article with points that could be further discussed. Even know results were apparent this article was left more open-ended, maybe to leave the reader no choice but to ask questions? This type of structure demonstrates the discourse communities will to speak freely and offer any elaboration that is needed. The different formatting of the articles APA and MLA represent the different characteristics that both discourse communities possess. The Athletic Training discourse community utilized an APA format in this article, this is representative of the concise, reliability and validity that is expected when writing in this discourse community. The authors of the Writing Studies article utilized the MLA format for the structure of their paper which is typical of the discourse community. This type of format demonstrates the discourse community’s openness to further discuss and elaborate on the subject at hand. The difference in the formatting of the citations on both the reference and works cited pages represent the discourse communities’ differences of what they stress importance on when using multiple sources. MLA citations always begin with the title name and APA citations usually begin with author first. The Athletic Training discourse community, using the APA format prefers to emphasize the importance of the author (writer) contrary to the discourse community of Writing Studies who choose to emphasize the importance of the subject in their citation. The conventions that were apparent in the articles displayed the discourse communities’ differences in respect to conveying information. The Haas and Flower article had multiple visual illustrations that conveyed precise information in a quick manner. This is standard of the Writing Studies discourse communities will to open minded for elaboration. Presenting a graph or figure can reflect the need for more discussion. The McKeon el. at. article used only one display of visual illustration to convey information which is contrary to the discourse community who is usually under time constraints. The authors chose to use more grammar conventions such as mechanics, usage, and sentence structure to convey their message. This is also typical of the discourse community of Athletic Training and their continued effort to communicate in a fashion that is easily understood, straight to the point, concise and efficient. The last noted similarity in both articles was the fact that the articles were written in a manner that provided information to improve their discourse communities. Knowledge is power, and this was reflective in both articles with the information that was conveyed. This makes sense as both discourse communities have common goals and that is to better the community to which they belong by further research and continued communication. Reflection This Genre Analysis has given me the opportunity to explore and examine the different writing styles of the discourse communities of Writing Studies and Athletic Training. Despite that the discourse communities are from completely different realms, I analyzed both articles which later proved to achieve one common goal and that was communication through writing. After analyzing the two articles it was clear that the discourse communities had different as well as similar writing styles that they utilized to convey their messages. I was able to gain an understanding that the overall goal of conveying information effectively and concisely. Of which, ironically, was a common goal among both discourse communities. This analysis has also given me a better understanding of how writing, or the type of writing used can identify the characteristics of a discourse community. For example, the Athletic Training discourse community writes in a fashion that is straight forward and to the point to communicate the outcome. The Writing Studies discourse community tends to leave some information open ended, up for discussion they are a little laxer in their approach. No matter the approach in writing among the discourse community the bottom line will always be the same, to write in a manner that is concise and effective. Another very important aspect that was observed was the importance of adapting to the writing styles of the discourse community you belong to. The company will be sending expatriates to the new subsidiary and will also be hiring new staff from the host country itself, which makes it important that both types of employees are adequately trained and developed before they can start working on the foreign lands. The company will have to train and develop its Indian employees in such a way that the clients do not feel in the services being offered to them by the headquarters or the subsidiary. The company will also have to ensure that the Indian employees are aware about the work culture of the headquarters and communication style so that they can avoid communication barriers and can function properly (Dowling, Welch and Schuler, 1999). On the other hand, it is also important for the company to arrange for training and development programs for its home country employees (e xpatriates) that will be aimed at increasing their cultural awareness and sensitivity. Another issue that arises while planning the training and development program of the employees is that how and where they will be trained. The company can definitely not afford to call the Indian employees to its headquarters for training and development as it will be highly expensive and time consuming. Thus, the company will have to send a team of capable professionals to India before the commencement of work operations so that they can hold training and development sessions to train the Indian employees. The company will also have to hire professional helpers to help in training and developing their expatriates who will be travelling to India for looking after the work operations. Therefore, arranging for the training and development of the employees will also pose a great issue to the human resource managers of the company.
